- UCharacter formats, which you create and change with the Character Format window, are
- Sstored in the Character Format (
- ) Catalog. You apply a character format using the

- Catalog by clicking the
- icon on the right side of the document window.
- To apply a format:
- $Select the text you want to format.
- Click a format in the Catalog.

- Character format properties
- USet the following properties in the Character Format window. For keyboard shortcuts,

- The available font families.
- KSize
- The pop-up menu contains standard font sizes. You can type a font
- 8size from 4 to 400 points, including a fractional size.
- @Angle, Weight,
- The settings available for each font family.
- Variation
- FStyle
- These settings enable you to change text. For example:

- strikethrough
- overline
- superscript
- subscript
- outline

- You can also put change bars beside text and kern character pairs.

- Color
- Use this setting to assign a spot color to a character format. For help
- >with printing spot color separations, click

- Positive values move characters apart; negative values move them et
- 6together. The value is a percentage of the font size.
- UFont Quality
- Whether FrameMaker will use a bitmap font or print with outline
- 1quality when printing the font to a LaserWriter.

- Using the keyboard to apply a format
- 0To apply a character format using the keyboard:
- 7Select the text you want to change and press Command-\
- The tag area changes to
- ?Start typing the format name until it appears in the Tag area.
- OType only enough letters to identify the format. You can also press one letter
- Frepeatedly to scroll through the formats that begin with that letter.
- OYou can also use the Up Arrow or Down Arrow key to scroll through the formats.
- #To apply the format, press Return.
- OTo cancel applying a format, press Control-C or click in the document window.
- PFor other keyboard shortcuts used to format characters, click

- Using fonts
- LTo ensure consistent use of fonts in your documents, use the
- Catalog and
- Catalog to apply character formats and paragraph formats, respectively.
- RWhen you type, text appears in the paragraph
- s default font (as specified in the
- VParagraph F

- ). To override a paragraph
- s default font for certain
- \words and phrases, create a character format using the
- Characte

- Using the Character Format window
- >To create a character format for selected words and phrases:
- $Select the text you want to change.
- 'Choose Character from the Format menu.
- PThe Character Format window appears, showing the settings of the selected text.
- XTo display a format
- s properties (rather than those of selected text), hold down Option nt
- 'and click the format in the
- Catalog.
- BChange the
- character format
- properties
- in the window.
- VTo leave a property unchanged from the paragraph default font, turn a check box gray,
- Achoose As Is from a pop-up menu, or delete text from a text box.
- PTo change all properties to As Is, make the Character Format window active and
- Rpress Command-Shift-X. To return the properties to their original settings, press
- Command-Shift-V.
